Michael “Mike” Jay Murphy, 78, of Flora, died Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Franciscan Hospital East in Lafayette. Mike was born t? the late Richard M. and Elsie I. Snively Murphy on December 3, 1941 in Oak Park, Illinois. Mike was a 1960 graduate of Flora High School and was a member of the marching band as well as a sports manager. 1fter high school Mike served in the US Airforce and spent time at bases as far north as Maine and as far south as Texas, with several stops in between(it’s classified!). After his honorable discharge, Mike rollowed his passion for all things mechanical to the aeronautical industry where he worked for Unite1 Airlines. Mike’s “wanderlust” led him to the industry he would call home for the next 27 years. At tHe wheel of a semi, wearing his white shirt as a uniform, Mike rolled through 48 states and logged two arid a half million accident-free miles. Mike hauled all kinds of cargo, from giant stuffed animals to hand grenades. One of Mike’s most expensive hauls was slot machines, valued at 1.5 million dollars from Reno to Atlantic City and he had an escort the whole trip. The last seven years of driving, Mike stayep closer to home to care for his mother. After Elsie passed in 2006, Mike retired and moved into the family home in Flora. Mike enjoyed fishing, building model ships and planes, and was an avid reader and movie buff. His favorite author was Clive Cussler, but anything about planes, tractors, tanks, locomotives or military history would do. Uncle Mike was a devoted family man and rarely missed a holiday or celebration. He was also a man of strong faith. His blessings before a family meal were infamous and often so full of appreciation that by the end, the rest of the family was praying for a warm meal. Mike loved his nieces to pieces and he is survived by Catherine Murphy of Carmel, Amanda Miller her husband Kristoffer Miller and beautiful great niece Adeline Miller of Indianapolis. Friends may visit Friday, August 14, 2020 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Wheeler Family Funeral

Home-Baker Chapel, 204 South Center Street, Flora, IN 46929. Graveside service will be at 4:00 PM at Maple Lawn Cemetery with Carroll County Honor Guard rites. Pastor Morgan Young officiating.
