Norman L. Beck, 84, of Flora, IN was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, January 10, 2021 at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN. Norm was born to the late Virgil and Ruby Marie Cree Beck on April 20, 1936 in Deer Creek Township, Cass County, IN. Norm graduated from Young America High School in 1954, then studied electronics at DeVry Tech in Chicago and received an FCC License for Radar endorsement.  On June 2, 1957, Norm married his high school sweetheart, Jane Harness, in Young America, IN.  He started his first TV repair business in 1958 and in November of the same year he joined the Army National Guard. In 1960 Norm and Jane moved to Flora and over the next sixty years they grew their business, Beck’s Furniture and Appliances, to add floor and window coverings. Jane still owns and operates the business today with their son Gordon. Norm also worked as the service manager at Zinn Kitchens in Flora for many years and loved his Zinn’s family.

Norm’s life of service began at 21 when he joined the Young America Lions Club. One of his proudest achievements was being a founding member and the first President of the Flora Lions Club in 1967. He served as Zone Chairman and as Deputy to the District Governor. Norm was very active in starting the Lions’ milkshake trailer project and continued for many years as chief cook and bottle washer. He also served in many capacities during the annual Flora Hog Jog. When the Flora Lions Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2017, Norm was honored to serve as the Charter President and he received the Lions’ International President’s Certificate of Appreciation, the 4th highest honor a Lion can receive.  Norm served in the Flora Community Club and was a charter member and president of the Senior Citizens Apartments Board. Always a proud American, Norm initiated the annual display of flags along Flora’s streets and maintained them for years.

Norm’s hobbies over the years included model trains, shopping for antiques with Jane, and hauling his entire family down the street behind his dad’s Ford Ferguson tractor in the Flora Christmas parade. He loved church hymns and sang tenor with his beloved sister and brothers in the Beck Family Quartet. Norm and Jane went everywhere together. They traveled the world and particularly enjoyed visiting U.S. Presidential libraries. On most weekends, Norm and Jane could be found cheering on children and grandchildren at sporting events and they vacationed with each of their children’s families.

My thoughts and prayers to all of you. Norm was always such a nice guy and over all of my life, I don’t think my parents got their drapes or carpet from anyone but Norm and Jane. Their business is a staple in Flora and Carroll County. Norm was always so kind and loved helping others, he will be missed. Thinking of you all.
