2025
Phyllis Ann Shoff, 87, of Flora, passed peacefully in her home on Monday, October 6, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born August 28, 1938, in Logansport, Indiana, Phyllis was the daughter of the late Lee and Helen (Jones) Flora. She married the love of her life, R. Dean Shoff, on August 7, 1955, in Flora. This year, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary surrounded by their family — a beautiful milestone that reflected their lifelong devotion to one another. Dean survives.
Phyllis was a graduate of St. Elizabeth School of Nursing and proudly served as a Charge Nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, where her compassion and dedication touched countless lives. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi and an active member of First Brethren Church, where she shared her musical gifts as a pianist, choir member, and director of the children’s choir.
Phyllis’s many talents extended beyond her profession and service. In her youth, she earned the title of State Fair Grand Champion in Sewing, a passion she carried throughout her life. She also loved gardening, creating beauty in her home and surroundings with the same care she gave to her family.
A devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, Phyllis was the heart of her family. She fulfilled a lifelong dream by completing her nursing degree after raising her seven children — a testament to her perseverance and love of learning. Her faith guided every aspect of her life, and she inspired those around her to lead with kindness, love, and grace.
Phyllis and Dean shared many cherished adventures, from family vacations to Mackinac Island and other states, to travels overseas in Hawaii, the Bahamas, Europe, and Canada just being to the two of them. She found joy in making holidays special, preparing meals for large family gatherings, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.
She is survived by her beloved husband, R. Dean Shoff, and their children: Terry Shoff (Terry Duff), Michael (Lonnie) Shoff, Joy Shoff, Belinda (Tony) Griffin, Lori (John) Kinzie, Janice (Jim) Smith, and Jeffrey Shoff; her bother: Carol Flora; 19 grandchildren: Matthew Plant, Anthony Plant, Alexa Brandfon, Nikita Shoff, Edgar Boettcher IV, Bryan Boettcher, Kathryn Baumann, Heather Holmes, Guy Wigbels, Sarah Martin, Emma Avila, Elliot Packard, Johnna Kinzie, Lydia Ward, Cole Smith, Juliet Smith, Samantha Oakley, Nick Shoff, and Alex Shoff; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Tom Flora; infant sister Sharon Kay; sister by marriage Connie McCracken; and her cherished in-laws.
Phyllis also leaves behind her two beloved cats, Molly and Toby, who were her faithful companions.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Family Funeral Home – Baker Chapel, 204 South Center Street, Flora, Indiana. A celebration of Phyllis’s life will begin at 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow at Zion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Phyllis’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Phyllis’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith, love, and service — a legacy that will continue to live on through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
The Shoff family would like to thank IU Health Hospice staff for their care and kindness.
